Ornamental fish culture systems
• Selection of several cultural systems according to species, developmental stage, species, and the availability of space
Main systems
Glass tanks: The most prevalent type of tank in public aquariums is glass.
Cement tank : Cement tanks are most frequently used for intense and semi-intensive decorative fish farming and production.
Earthen pond : Earthen ponds are the most popular systems for large ornamental fish production.
Plastic tanks: fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and plastic tanks made of plastic
Glass tank culture systems
• Few freshwater species are typically bred in glass tanks and used for species' larval rearing.e.g. -
Freshwater Angel Species (Pterophyllum scalare)
Discuss fish species (Symphysodon discus).
Tetra fish species (White Widow Tetra, Cardinal, Neon)
Glass tank system size depends on the fish species used for culture. Glass tanks are mainly used in indoor aquaria, semi-intensive, and intensive culture practices.
Cement tank culture systems
Typically, cement tank systems are utilized as breeding, rearing, grow-out, or combination systems. For instance, as an egg-scattering breeding technique (for goldfish and carp), In order to develop a system for live bearers (guppy, swordtail), use both inside and outside systems. The size requirements can be flexible, from small ponds to big aquaria. Primarily used for intense or semi-intensive cultural practices e.g., Oscar Fish, Swordtail, Molly Fish, Malawi, Guppy
Plastic tanks and fiber-reinforced plastic tanks (FRP)
These two kinds are mostly employed in semi-intensive or intensive indoor facilities for the production of ornamental fish.
• Expensive at first, but simple to handle and maintain. Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP), as opposed to concrete, minimizes germs. Pathogens are not present in laminate.
• Fin and scale damage are eliminated by the gentle, fish-friendly surface. This can make one more vulnerable to illness.
Earthen/ Mud pond
Large outdoor mud ponds are essential for the production of freshwater ornamentals in Sri Lanka and the majority of other nations. Mud ponds are more suited for several species, such as carps, goldfish, angels, etc.
• There are three adoption options: extensive, semi-intensive, and intense.
• There are two types of ponds depending on the water source.
- Diversion ponds
- Barrage ponds
